EU Assesses the Safety of Laminaria
Aeruginosa Polyphenol Extract
As a New Resource Food
According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), at the request of the European Commission, the EU Food Safety Authority issued an opinion on the safety of extracts of Ecklonia cava phlorotannins as a new resource food.
Khumbu is a kind of seaweed with high medicinal value, also known as "black dish", "chaese", "five palms", etc., extracted by alcohol, can obtain extracts rich in brown algae polyphenols.
The expert group of the EU Food Safety Authority believes that the composition, specifications, batch differences, stability, and production process information of the polyphenol extract of the brown algae of the kelp are detailed and there is no food safety problem.
This new resource food is intended to be used as a food supplement for healthy adults over the age of 12. The EU expert group assessed the 3.75 mg/kg body weight/day intake as safe by toxicological evaluation.
The EU Food Safety Authority's expert group also believes that for adolescents aged 12-14, the maximum daily intake is 163 mg/day; for adolescents over 14 years of age, the maximum daily intake is 230 mg/day; for adulthood The maximum daily intake is 263 mg/day.
