A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition evaluated the effects of polyphenol-rich wild berries on cardiovascular health and gut microflora. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel design study, 66 healthy men were randomly assigned to take a polyphenol-rich aronia extract, whole fruit aronia powder or placebo (maltodextrin ), The duration is 12 weeks.
The results of the study showed that compared with the control group, the arterial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the subjects in the aronia extract and whole fruit aronia powder groups increased significantly after 12 weeks of administration. Subjects taking the aronia extract found a significant improvement in FMD two hours and 12 weeks after taking it. There is no obvious change in the diversity of intestinal flora. Ingestion of aronia extract can significantly increase the growth of aerosol, while intake of whole fruit aronia powder will significantly increase the Bacteroides subgroup.
This study is consistent with earlier research on the positive effects of polyphenol intake on cardiovascular health.
